Brodhead is a city in Green and Rock Counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,180 at the 2000 census. In February 2000, the city annexed a portion of land from the Town of Spring Valley in Rock County.

History

Just south of town is a historic marker for the Half-Way Tree, a bur oak supposedly identified by Native Americans as the halfway point on a foot trail between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,180 people, 1,301 households, and 876 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,956.1 people per square mile (753.3/km²). There were 1,355 housing units at an average density of 833.5 per square mile (321.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.05% White, 0.28% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.53% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.

There were 1,301 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,506, and the median income for a family was $46,199. Males had a median income of $32,031 versus $24,442 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,455. About 6.6% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.1% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
